Large and richly textured, with an incredible range of shapes and shades, they make a bouquet full and "expensive" without any extra effort. When the season is and when to buy
The dahlia is a truly seasonal flower. It opens from the end of July and blooms until the first frosts, while the richest choice of varieties and shades comes in August and September. In autumn dahlias are fresher, more varied and more reasonably priced than greenhouse roses — which is why they become the heroes of September bouquets, including those for 1 September.
How to choose fresh dahlias
- A firm centre. In a fresh flower the centre of the bloom is springy, and the petals are neither limp nor dry at the edges.
- A strong stem. It should be firm just below the bloom — dahlias "break" at the neck if they are not fresh.
- A clean cut. No slime and no smell of rot, and the water in the bucket is clear.
Care: how to make them last longer
Dahlias are more capricious than roses, but with proper care they will delight for a week:
- Trim the stems at an angle and put them in water straight away.
- Change the water every day — dahlias like clean water and cloud it quickly.
- Keep them cool, away from direct sun, radiators and fruit (ethylene speeds up wilting).
Popular varieties and forms
- Café au Lait. The famous dusty coffee-coloured "dinner plate" dahlia — a favourite for weddings and signature bouquets.
- Decorative. Classic large heads, the main accent of a composition.
- Pompon and ball-shaped. Small, dense spheres — ideal for rhythm and filling out a bouquet.
- Cactus. Spiky petals and a graphic texture for bold combinations.
What to pair them with in a bouquet
Large dahlias work well as an accent, and hydrangea, asters, lisianthus and grasses help build a bouquet around them — they add airiness and a natural feel. Deep burgundy varieties bring drama, while Café au Lait brings tenderness and status. We often pair dahlias with seasonal hydrangea.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ, also in JSON-LD)
How long do dahlias last in a vase?
With proper care, cut dahlias last 4–7 days. It is not the longest-lasting flower, so fresh water every day, a slanted cut and a cool spot are important. In a signature bouquet with more durable companions (hydrangea, grasses, greenery), the composition as a whole lasts longer.
When is the dahlia season?
Dahlias bloom from the end of July until the first frosts, with the peak in August and September. It is a truly seasonal flower: in autumn it is fresh, wonderfully varied and more reasonably priced than greenhouse roses. That is why dahlias are the heroes of September bouquets, including those for 1 September.
What colours do dahlias come in?
The palette is vast: white, cream, peach, pink, coral, red, burgundy, yellow, orange and bicolour varieties. What dahlias do not come in is true blue or light blue. The fashionable shade of the season is the dusty coffee tone of Café au Lait.
What should I pair dahlias with in a bouquet?
Dahlias work beautifully with hydrangea, asters, lisianthus and spray roses, as well as with grasses and seasonal greenery — these add airiness and a natural feel to a bouquet. Large varieties are good as an accent, small pompon ones as filler.
How can I keep dahlias fresh for longer?
Trim the stems at an angle, change the water daily, and keep the bouquet cool and away from fruit and direct sun. Dahlias like clean water and do not tolerate stuffy air — these are the main rules for making them last.
Is it fine to give dahlias as a gift?
Yes, and it is a beautiful, homely yet distinguished gift — especially in autumn, in season. Dahlias are appropriate for a teacher on 1 September, for a birthday, or as a gesture of attention. One or two large Café au Lait blooms look elegant and modern.
