A florist's guide to a bouquet for coming home from the maternity hospital: which flowers are appropriate around a baby, how bouquets for a girl and a boy differ, how much it costs and how to order delivery to the hospital.

Leaving the maternity hospital is one of the most touching occasions, and a bouquet for it has its own requirements: it should look beautiful in photographs, yet be safe and comfortable to hold beside a newborn. Over fourteen years, we, the Lacy Bird florists, have made a great many discharge bouquets and know these nuances well. Here is how to choose well.

> In short. For a discharge, choose delicate bouquets in clean colours, without a strong scent or pollen: peony-type and spray roses, lisianthus, hydrangea, ranunculus. For a girl, powder pink and pink; for a boy, blue, white and mint. A medium size is best, so it is easy to hold together with the baby. A compact option starts at 4 000 ₽, a medium one is 6 000–14 000 ₽. It is best to order delivery to the hospital for an exact hour.

Which flowers are appropriate for a discharge

The main rule: a bouquet near a newborn should have no strong scent and no shedding pollen, and should be neat and clean in colour:

  • Peony-type and spray roses — soft fullness without an intrusive fragrance.
  • Lisianthus — delicate and airy, more hypoallergenic than many flowers.
  • Hydrangea — volume and pastel shades, lovely in photographs; read more in our guide to hydrangea.
  • Ranunculus — a delicate texture and soft shades.

What we avoid: strongly scented lilies and abundant pollen, "prickly" or heavy arrangements, and harsh, loud colours.

A bouquet for a girl and for a boy

If a girl has been born

The classic choice is a warm, "girlish" palette: powder pink, soft pink, peach, cream. Peony-type roses and ranunculus look perfect here.

If a boy has been born

Calm, "boyish" tones: blue, white, mint, smoky green. Blue-toned hydrangea and white roses are a combination that never fails.

A neutral option

If the baby's sex is meant to stay a surprise, or is not known, choose a white and green or pastel palette: it suits any occasion and looks beautiful in discharge photographs.

How large should the bouquet be

At the discharge, the bouquet is often held at the same time as the baby, so a huge armful is awkward and draws attention away in photographs. The best choice is a medium bouquet, neat in shape, that is easy to hold in one hand. If you would like something grander, it is better to add a second arrangement for the mother separately than to make one giant bouquet.

Delivery to the maternity hospital: how to order

A discharge is almost always tied to an exact time, so we advise booking delivery to the hospital for a specific hour and placing the order 1–2 days ahead. Please ask us whether the bouquet should be handed to the people meeting you at the entrance (flowers are often not allowed into the ward itself) — we will agree a convenient arrangement. If you wish, we will include a card with congratulations to the mother and baby.
