Daisies: types, care and how to make a bouquet
20 August 2026 · Lacy Bird florists
A practical guide from the Lacy Bird florists: what is called a daisy in bouquets, when the season is, how long they last in a vase and how to create a light wildflower bouquet.
Daisies are about lightness, summer and sincerity. In bouquets, "daisy" is most often used for oxeye daisies and matricaria – hardy flowers that last a long time. At Lacy Bird we love them for their wildflower mood, and we create both light mono bouquets and signature combinations.

What is called a daisy in a bouquet
The botanical chamomile daisy does not last long as a cut flower, so in floristry "daisy" usually refers to:
- Oxeye daisy – a large white "daisy" with a yellow centre, the most recognisable.
- Matricaria – small, dense blooms that work beautifully as filler.
- Daisy-type chrysanthemum – daisy-like chrysanthemums, very long-lasting.
When is the season
The peak for "daisies" is summer, June–September, when they are at their freshest and most affordable. Greenhouse-grown and chrysanthemum-type varieties are available for longer. In summer, daisies are the foundation of light wildflower bouquets.
How to choose fresh ones
- Firm petals, neither limp nor dried out.
- A dense centre that does not shed.
- A strong stem, green leaves and clean water in the bucket.
Care
- Trim the stems at an angle and remove the lower leaves (they rot quickly and cloud the water).
- Change the water every day – daisies like clean water.
- Keep them cool, away from direct sunlight.
What to pair in a bouquet
Daisies create a wildflower mood: they are arranged with grasses, cornflowers, yarrow and greenery. A contrast works beautifully too – daisies with peony-type roses or hydrangea bring sincerity to a bouquet. A mono bouquet of daisies is a simple, warm gift.

Frequently asked questions
How long do daisies last in a vase?
"Daisies" (oxeye daisy, matricaria, daisy-type chrysanthemums) are among the longest-lasting flowers and stay fresh for 7–10 days. Remove the lower leaves, change the water daily and keep them cool.
What flower is a daisy in a bouquet?
Usually not the botanical chamomile (it wilts quickly when cut), but the oxeye daisy – a large white "daisy" with a yellow centre – matricaria with small blooms, or daisy-type chrysanthemums. All of them are hardy and last well.
When is daisy season?
Summer, June–September – this is when they are at their freshest and most affordable. Greenhouse-grown and chrysanthemum-type varieties are available for longer.
What to pair daisies with?
For a wildflower mood – with grasses, cornflowers, yarrow and greenery. For contrast – with peony-type roses or hydrangea. A simple mono bouquet of daisies is lovely too.
Why do daisies cloud the water so quickly?
Because of the lower leaves on the stems: when submerged in water, they rot quickly. Remove any foliage below the waterline and change the water every day – the bouquet will last longer.
